I’ve just enjoyed my first Mothering Sunday, spent in part having a Sunday roast in a lovely local pub with my husband, son and mother-in-law. We were chatting about my blog, and my mother-in-law prompted me to think about our miscarriage again, and whether it feels different now, over a year on and with my little boy in my arms. And so I have thought about that, and she’s right (as usual!), it really does feel different. But also, some things really haven’t changed. Continue reading “Looking Back”
You’re doing really well
Today I went to a baby massage class with my little one – it was great to start to learn about doing baby massage, but also great to chat to the other mums and the midwife after the class. The midwife asked us what we’d found difficult or surprising as new mums, and we all opened up a bit. It brought home to me just how much being a mum defies expectations, and also how we are each our own worst critic. At the end of the class, the midwife asked each of us to spend 10 minutes each day doing something for ourselves, if we can. And since it’s been ages since I last wrote a blog post, and for the moment at least my baby is asleep, I thought I’d attempt to do some writing, while thinking back on all that I’ve learnt over the past 4 months. Did Jesus have Colic?
A friend of mine always knows just how to get me thinking, and a chat we had this week was no different. We both became mums in 2017, and as new mums we’re going through our own challenges (be it feeding, sleeping (us or the babies), winding, teething, etc.) and joys (seeing their first smiles, watching them learn to interact, become aware of the world, move their limbs…). I’m learning that while every baby is very different, there are also a lot of similarities in what we go through as new mums. Before becoming a mum I hadn’t really thought that as a baby and a new mum, Jesus and Mary did all these things too. It’s made me see the Christmas story a bit differently.
